Germany invites Morocco to a meeting on Libya, a sign of a thaw?
The fragile peace agreement between Libyan factions, reached in November in Tunis under the auspices of the United Nations, is deadlocked. Fearing a resumption of arms, Germany has taken the initiative to call on the main international players on this issue to participate in a new conference in Berlin, scheduled for June 23.
Morocco is on Chancellor Angela Merkel's guest list, the le360.ma website indicates, citing a Moroccan “government source”. He added that Rabat has not yet responded to this invitation, which comes as relations between the two countries are strained. On May 6, the kingdom indeed recalled its ambassador to Berlin, for "the hostile acts and the infringing actions (of Germany) with regard to the superior interests of the Kingdom of Morocco" and her "continued determination to fight the regional role of Morocco, in particular on the Libyan file ”. For the record, the German government had, to the chagrin of the Moroccan Foreign Ministry, dismissed Morocco during the Berlin conference in January 2020.
This invitation is a new call from the foot on the part of the Merkel government towards Morocco. In mid-April, Germany had refused to welcome Brahim Ghali to its hospitals.
In addition, this Thursday, June 3 is being held in Morocco a new session of the interlibyan dialogue devoted to the distribution of the seven strategic positions of responsibility between the representatives of the West, East and Center of Libya, reports the Saudi channel Al Arabiya. A process for which Morocco hosted all rounds of dialogue in 2020, in Bouznika, Skhirat and Tangier.
