Joe Biden
The family of Joe Biden, Democratic presidential candidate, has
seen several tragedies but is now united in support of the former
vice-president.
A strong family history. Joe Biden, candidate for President of the
United States, has been in politics since the early 1970s, but his first
election to the Senate is marked by a tragedy: a month after the election, in
November 1972, his wife Neilia and their daughter Naomi died in a car accident
in which Beau and Hunter, their sons aged 3 and 2, were injured. It was at the
bedside of hospitalized boys that Joe Biden was sworn in, in January 1973. For
years, he made the daily trips between Washington, where he sat, and
Wilmington, Delaware, where his sons lived. that he wanted to see before they
went to bed. Two and a half years later, Joe Biden's brother introduced him to
24-year-old future teacher Jill. They married on June 17, 1977 and welcomed
Ashley four years later. They raised together the senator's two sons, Jill
Biden proudly presenting herself as a "military mom", in reference to
Beau's commitment. In 2007, after resuming her studies, Jill Biden became
"Dr Biden" with a doctorate in educational science. She continued to
teach for the eight years of her husband's vice-presidency - and intends to
continue teaching if Joe Biden is elected.
But the drama hit the Biden family again: in 2015, Beau Biden died
of brain cancer. The forties, father of two, attorney general of Delaware and
enlisted in the National Guard for which he was deployed in Iraq, had a
promising political future ahead of him and he could have followed in his
father's footsteps. A little less than two years later, the Biden family found
themselves in the "gossip" category of the press: Hunter and Hallie
Biden, Beau's brother and widow, had a romantic relationship for a few months.
“Hallie and I are incredibly lucky to have found love and mutual support during
this difficult time, and it has been obvious to those who love us the most. We
are very fortunate to have family and friends who have supported us every step
of the way, ”the 40-year-old confirmed at the time. But their story did not
last.
A month after their breakup in 2019, Hunter Biden, regularly
targeted by Republicans for his overseas business ties they suspect were linked
to his father's vice-presidency, remarried Melissa Cohen, whom he met six days
earlier. They had a baby boy last March, the fifth child in his forties - he had
three children with Natalie, his first wife, and a fourth born from a brief
affair in 2018. Naomi, Finnegan, Maisy and Natalie, four of the Seven Joe Biden
grandchildren appeared in a video at the Democratic convention, supporting the
man they nickname "Pop" who is keen to talk to them every day. Beau's
children are particularly close to their grandfather and live close to his
home. “We sit on our porch, they sit on the patio with chairs and we talk about
their days. From school. Of their arguments. But at least I see them, ”he said
at the end of March, referring to the measures taken in the midst of the
pandemic to continue to see his grandchildren.
