Trump or Biden? The 5 states where the home stretch of the American
election is played out
Three days after the election date, the United States still does
not know the name of its next president. Five states are still making the
suspense last.
The outcome of the US presidential election is still hanging over a
few key states. The count is not yet complete, and the race is too close to
declare a winner.
Each state allocates a certain number of electors. With those
already determined, Joe Biden currently has 253 or 264 voters, due to
uncertainties about the results in Arizona (11 voters), and Donald Trump 214.
It takes 270 to reach the White House.
Alaska's three big voters have yet to be awarded, but no Democrats
have won in decades and the outcome of the vote in favor of Donald Trump is in
no doubt. Update on the situation in each of the five states where the outcome
is still pending.
Arizona
In the state of Arizona, there are 11 major voters in play. Joe
Biden registers 50.1% of the vote there, against 48.5% for Donald Trump, a
difference of 47,000 votes, according to a partial count 90% of ballots.
The Fox News channel and the American news agency Associated Press
(AP) ruled on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday that the Democrat had won this
western state, considering it impossible for the president to catch up.
Other media, such as the New York Times or CNN, prefer to wait to
attribute victory in this state which traditionally votes Republican.
Local authorities do not think they will be able to finalize the
count before Friday, probably.
Georgia
The state of Georgia has 16 electors. 98% of the votes were counted
in this Southeastern state which has always voted Republican since 1996.
Donald Trump's lead has continued to melt since Tuesday evening and
Joe Biden passed in front on the night of Thursday to Friday: the Democrat has
1,096 votes more than Donald Trump, or about 49.4% of the vote each.
Nevada
6 major voters at stake in the state of Nevada. 89% of the votes
were counted in this western desert state, whose largest city is Las Vegas, and
which had chosen Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Joe Biden is currently in the lead, with 49.4%, against 48.5% for
Donald Trump. This represents a difference of less than 11,500 votes.
Pennsylvania
In Pennsylvania 20 major voters at stake. 95% of the votes were
counted in this industrial state of the "rust belt" of the Northeast,
where the two candidates campaigned fiercely.
Donald Trump's very important advance on election night was reduced
with the inclusion of ballots sent by mail, and he now only has about 18,000
votes more than his rival (49.5% against 49.2% for Joe Biden).
The likely dominance of Democratic ballots among those mailed out
and remaining to be counted is likely to tip the outcome in favor of the
Democrat, according to US media.
North Carolina
Finally, North Carolina has 15 electors. 95% of the votes were
counted in this south-eastern state, traditionally republican.
U.S. elections 2020: the race for the White House
Advantage for the time being to Donald Trump (50.0%) over Joe Biden
(48.6%), a lead of about 77,000 votes. But postal votes sent by election day -
November 3 - are accepted there if they arrive within nine days.
