US elections: Germany worries about "very explosive situation"
Berlin | Germany is worried about a "very explosive
situation" in the United States, where Donald Trump declared himself the
winner of the presidential election even before the end of the vote count, the
Minister of Defense said on Wednesday.
The result of "this election is not yet decided (...) the
votes are still being counted", observed on ZDF Annegret
Kramp-Karrenbauer.
The conservative minister deemed the "very explosive situation
in the United States" and warned of "a constitutional crisis" in
the country. "This is something that should concern us all," added
the Minister of Defense of Angela Merkel's government.
The minister added that relations between Berlin and Washington had
been "strained over the past four years" under President Trump.
"This friendship is more than the simple question of the current
administration in the White House", she wants to believe.
In the future, "we will have to do a lot more for our own
interests, in Germany and especially with other Europeans", advocated Ms
Kramp-Karrenbauer.
Donald Trump on Wednesday took the responsibility of plunging the
United States into the unknown by declaring himself the winner of the
presidential election, as the count continued and his Democratic opponent Joe
Biden seemed in a more favorable position.
The specter of long days of uncertainty and bitter legal battles
now haunts the world's leading power already shaken by major health, economic
and social crises.
