Bruce Campell, a 64-year-old retired electrical engineer, has always had a very creative vision. When he was in his twenties, he bought a 10-acre piece of land for $23,000 in the woods of Hillsboro, Oregon with a very clear vision of what he would do with it. He took an old plane and a big piece of land and turned them into a unique home on Earth.

 Innovative plan

Ever since he was young, Campbell has had an affinity for tinkering with old items and creating new things. His plan for this plot of land was to use it as a place to build a house for himself, a house he wanted to fashion from several different freighters. It seemed like a very novel plan, but then Campbell heard about a house someone else had built. About two decades after he first hatched his plan, Bruce Campbell heard of Joanne Ussery, a Mississippi hairdresser. She had bought a Boeing 727 and transformed it into a house. Her old house had burned down, so she chose to renovate a working plane next to a calm river. This got Campbell thinking and he decided to change his plans.

Boeing 727

In 1999, Campbell decided to purchase a Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways for the modest sum of $100,000. When he had bought the plane, he had to transport the huge vehicle to the forest of Oregon. As the aircraft had to be imported from Athens, Greece, transportation proved to be a bit problematic. The transportation costs eventually came to around $120,000, meaning he paid $220,000 for the plane, in all. For him, the plane was worth every penny.

Interior

The interior of the plane has all the comfort you could need. Many of the original elements of the plane have been kept as they were, such as some of the original seats and the toilets. Campbell even added a washing machine and sink. The Boeing 727 offers plenty of space, but Campbell lives quite modestly in his unusual home. He sleeps on a futon, cooks using a microwave and toaster, eats mostly cereal and canned food, and has built a lot of improvised equipment himself.
