Release of Moroccan Brahim Saadoun, sentenced to death by Donesk, thanks to Saudi mediation
Moroccan Brahim Saadoun, sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic for having fought in the Ukrainian army, was released thanks to the mediation of Saudi Arabia. He was transferred to Saudi Arabia, as part of an exchange between Moscow and Ukraine. The intervention of Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman, which led to his release and that of some other fighters of different nationalities, was made possible thanks to the excellent relations that bind the Saudi royal family to King Mohammed VI.
It should be noted that Morocco has followed very closely and discreetly the situation of Brahim Saadoune, a Moroccan citizen naturalized as Ukrainian in 2020 who moved to Ukraine in 2017 to pursue studies at the University of Aeronautics and kyiv aerospace sciences which he did not complete.
This situation was difficult and complicated to manage because Morocco does not come into contact with separatist entities within the framework of the territorial integrity of the countries.
Brahim Saadoun was arrested on March 12, 2022 in Mariupol, in the administrative region of Donestk, Ukraine, by pro-Russian separatist Ukrainian forces, while wearing the uniform of the Ukrainian state army, as a member of a navy unit of that country.
Married to a Ukrainian, he had joined the Ukrainian navy before the conflict and was sent to the theater of operations to fight the Russians.
Ten prisoners of war from several countries, including Brahim Saadoun, have been transferred from Russia to Saudi Arabia, as part of an exchange between Moscow and Ukraine, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. .
According to a press release from this ministry, the ten prisoners of war, including from Sweden, Morocco and Croatia, arrived in Saudi Arabia from Russia. This exchange was facilitated by the efforts of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who continues to undertake humanitarian initiatives in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, it was said.
