Baitas: The state of health of the Omicron case is stable and the epidemiological situation is not worrying
Morocco has identified its first Omicron case in a lady resident in the city of Casablanca, Wednesday, December 15, while the borders have been closed since the beginning of December. According to government spokesman Mustapha Baitas, the appearance of this new Omicron variant in Morocco is nothing more than the result of the continuous mutation of the virus, confirming that the variant did not arrive from abroad.
In response to questions from journalists during the weekly press briefing organized following the Government Council, the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with the Parliament, government spokesperson, Mustapha Baitas, returned to the data presented by the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, yesterday, concerning the discovery of a confirmed case of the new variant Omicron in Casablanca, noting that the lady contaminated by the new variant is "installed in Morocco and does not come from abroad".
“On the basis of the medical and scientific data obtained, the mutation appeared in Morocco, since viruses mutate on a daily basis, up to a hundred mutations. This has led to the emergence of the contaminated woman's case in the city of Casablanca, which is in stable condition, ”Baitas said.
At a time when fears continue to increase about the possibility of the arrival of the fourth wave of the phantom virus in Morocco, especially after the appearance of the first Omicron case, the government spokesman assured that the The epidemiological situation in the Kingdom is "stable and there is no need to worry about it".
Regarding the decision to extend the closure of air and sea borders until December 31, the minister explained that this decision comes "in order to preserve the gains obtained thanks to the process of vaccination against Covid-19". The first closure decision "made it possible to delay the arrival of the fourth wave in Morocco from which a number of countries are suffering," he added.

The minister also acknowledged that the government's action to close its air and maritime space has had a negative impact on the tourism sector. A heavy decision that had to be taken to avoid a "pandemic setback" that could have gone through our country, said the spokesperson. The government is "aware of the situation, but action had to be taken to protect lives," he said.
Regarding the return of Moroccans stranded abroad, the government official said: “We must be aware that we are not in a normal situation, but rather in a situation in which the epidemiological situation is changing every hour. The government has a duty to preserve the health of citizens and the gains obtained, and to take the decisions it deems appropriate, according to the evolution of the epidemiological situation ".
The government spokesperson also added that citizens who traveled abroad for whatever reason were given 48 hours before activating the first closure decision. That said, some of them were unable to undertake the return procedures, he stressed, and after that the decision was made to organize trips from the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Turkey, with support from the government in hotels dedicated for this purpose, in addition to monitoring their condition, before the government reconsidered its decision after the appearance of the Omicron variant in the city of Casablanca.
